Have Questions About Eyewear?
Whether you’re choosing your first pair of glasses or looking for the perfect frames, our expert guides make it easy. Find the answers you need below.
1. Understanding Your Prescription
What do OD and OS mean on my prescription?
OD stands for Oculus Dexter, which is the Latin term for your right eye. OS stands for Oculus Sinister, which refers to your left eye. Some modern prescriptions may simply use RE (Right Eye) and LE (Left Eye).
What do the numbers under SPH, CYL, and AXIS mean?
SPH (Sphere): Indicates the lens power needed to correct nearsightedness (minus sign) or farsightedness (plus sign).
CYL (Cylinder): Indicates the lens power needed to correct astigmatism. If this is blank, you do not have astigmatism.
AXIS: Indicates the orientation of the astigmatism correction, measured from 1 to 180 degrees.
CYL (Cylinder): Indicates the lens power needed to correct astigmatism. If this is blank, you do not have astigmatism.
AXIS: Indicates the orientation of the astigmatism correction, measured from 1 to 180 degrees.
2. Pupillary Distance (PD) Guide
What is Pupillary Distance (PD) and why is it important?
Pupillary Distance (PD) is the distance, measured in millimeters, between the centers of your pupils. It is crucial because it ensures the optical center of your lenses lines up perfectly with your eyes, providing you with the clearest possible vision.
How can I measure my PD at home?
You can measure your PD using a millimeter ruler and a mirror. Stand 8 inches away from the mirror, hold the ruler against your brow, and close your right eye. Align the 0mm mark with the center of your left pupil. Then, close your left eye, open your right eye, and read the millimeter line that aligns with the center of your right pupil. This number is your PD.
3. Choosing The Right Frames
How do I know which frames fit my face shape?
As a general rule, contrast is key. If you have a round face, angular frames (like square or rectangular) add definition. For square faces, round or oval frames soften strong jawlines. Oval faces can pull off nearly any frame shape, while heart-shaped faces look great in aviators or bottom-heavy frames.
What is frame size and how do I read it?
Frame sizing usually consists of three numbers printed on the inside of the temple arm (e.g., 52-18-140). The first number is the lens width, the second is the bridge width, and the third is the temple (arm) length, all measured in millimeters.
4. Lens Types & Care
What is the difference between single vision and progressive lenses?
Single vision lenses have one set viewing distance (either for distance, intermediate, or near viewing) across the entire lens. Progressive lenses provide a seamless transition between multiple viewing distances (distance, intermediate, and reading) without the visible line found in traditional bifocals.
How should I properly clean my lenses?
Always use a dedicated microfiber cloth and a lens cleaning solution. Avoid using hot water, window cleaners, paper towels, or your clothing, as these can easily scratch the premium anti-reflective coatings on your lenses.
